Mark and Jan are full-time professional house flippers, just like you see on TV but in real life. They also happen to be Paula's very first clients, as well as longest!
We asked them for some insight on what its like Flipping Homes!
How did you meet Paula?
It's actually a funny story on how we met Paula. One day we wandered in to the Remax office
to see about viewing a house. (on Jasper) Paula was there & offered to show us ... then she realized she didn't even have a car that day. So, she got in the car with us (complete strangers at the time) & off we went. We could have been " axe murderers" ha ha ... WE knew we weren't ... and that's how Mark & I became her very 1st clients!
How Many Homes Have You Flipped?
We have renovated 14 houses. 38 Brier Park will be #15 for flipping. There have been 4 more as actual residences. Renovation is now our source of income.
What are some of Your Favourite Parts?
My favourite part is the design element ... using one's creativity. For Mark I would say it's having a project ... he enjoys (I'm speaking for him) the physical labour.
The most satisfying aspect is taking a tired, dated house & making it look like new. I guess a sense of accomplishment is how to describe the feeling upon completion.
Do you have any Tips, Challenges or Advice to Share?
Three top reno tips would be:
#1 Be there every day!!
#2 Be organized.
#3 Have reliable trades people that you trust.
The top 3 challenges are:
#1 Contractors not showing up!
#2 Keeping costs down ... shopping smart.
#3 Lining up projects & workers in the proper sequence.
I'm adding a 4th ... we are getting too old for this!
My advice for flippers/renovators ...
Get in & get out in 6-8 weeks if possible.
Don't try to (both) work full-time & only have weekends for reno.
Have financial matters in order ... be realistic about costs.
Always allow 15-20% for "incidentals".
Also, it is a lot of hard work & far from glamorous as depicted on TV!!
